On South Saticoy Avenue, in Ventura County, is a neighborhood called Cabrillo Village. In close proximity to Linear Park and Enclave Dog Park is Cabrillo Village.
History
Farmworkers built, co-owned, and managed Cabrillo Village, an affordable housing community in the site of a former labor camp in Saticoy, California. In 1975, the workers faced eviction from the village after going on strike against the use of cheap labor and oppression. Residents banded together to fight the eviction rather than lose their homes, and in 1976 they were successful in acquiring Cabrillo Village. In order to create an affordable housing cooperative with resident ownership and control, they rebuilt the labor camp from 1936.
The newly acquired property's dilapidated cabins were expanded and renovated over the course of the following three years, and new, energy-efficient single-family homes and community facilities were also constructed. The 25-acre village now includes 160 new and renovated homes and a community center. The design and construction of the new housing units and the renovation of the older cabins were driven by the residents, with a particular focus on cultural, environmental, and family values. The new buildings feature modern adobe styling and passive and active solar heating systems.
