What is a Dental Inlay?

A tooth inlay is a custom-made filling used to heal a severely decayed or fractured tooth. An inlay is a single, strong repair designed to fit the contours of a cavity. The pits, fissures, and inlay covers are located between the cusp points of a tooth's chewing surface.

What are Dental Inlays made of?

  • Gold - provides the most durability.
  • Porcelain - provides the best esthetic result if the treatment area is within the "smile zone".
  • Composite resin - matches the natural color of the teeth and is just as durable as gold and porcelain.
  • Ceramic - composed of more sturdy and long-lasting materials than dental fillings and crowns.

How is a Dental Inlay done?

The dental inlay surgery restores the tooth by placing a custom-made filling in the afflicted area of your mouth. The procedure assists in the preservation of the injured tooth and the prevention of further degeneration.

First, the decay is carefully removed without entering the tooth's pulp cavity. Following that, a temporary filling is inserted. A final inlay is produced to fit properly in a dental lab. Finally, the temporary filling is removed, and the permanent inlay is affixed to the tooth.

What are the Benefits of Porcelain Inlays?

  • Dental inlays provide damaged teeth with further strength and support.
  • Dental inlays conserve tooth structure, compared to crowns which require more tooth removal.
