History

Montalvo was established around the time the Southern Pacific Railroad arrived in the area in 1887. J. G. Hill designed the town site in 1886 and is recognized as the "founder" of Montalvo. Some sources claim that Garci Rodrguez de Montalvo, the Spanish author who first described the Island of California in the 1510 novel Las Sergas de Esplandián, is the inspiration behind the community's name.

Annexation

Residents submitted proposals to accept annexation of Montalvo into Ventura in the 1980s and in 1992, the first annexation attempt was unsuccessful.

On three Montalvo streets south of the Bristol Shopping Center, 35 apartment buildings were built during the city of Ventura's eastward expansion in the 1970s and 1980s. There were 4,630 people living in Montalvo in 1990, and the median household income was $46,602. In September 2012, Montalvo was lastly incorporated into the city of Ventura.

Landmarks

Sam Korb's Trading Post, Loop's Restaurant, Little Heidelberg Restaurant, and The White Spot were notable Montalvo landmarks. In addition, Montalvo was home to a mound in the community's northern area that was thought to be the creation of Native Americans. It was described as having a 150-foot altitude, gently sloping sides, and a length of roughly one-quarter mile in the 1890s. According to press reports published later, significant portions of the mound were taken out and used as fill dirt.
